Safety Information

Cobroxin is an oral formulation of diluted cobra venom prepared according to the requirements of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS) and its supporting texts. The HPUS directs that Cobroxin formulations may be used, among other things, for the control of pain located in the back, head, throat, ovaries, and associated with period pain. Under United States law, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accepts the HPUS applications of Cobroxin and regulates the quality of its production.

FDA Approval, Efficacy and Safety

Cobroxin does not require FDA approval because it falls within the regulatory environment of the United States Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia. Unlike most homeopathic medicines, however, the efficacy and safety of Cobroxin is supported by significant clinical evidence including over 46 human clinical studies documenting the use of cobra venom as a pain reliever. Possible Side Effects

The majority of reported adverse effects to cobra venom are associated with the neurotoxic components of the venom. In clinical studies, subjects injected with cobra venom reported the following dose related adverse effects; headache, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, dizziness, sweating, palpitations, diplopia, nystagmus, hemiplegia. If they occur, the side effects of oral administration are usually nausea, headache and upset stomach.

Allergic reactions, sometimes severe (anaphylactic), to cobra venom have been reported when the product is injected. The first symptoms of anaphylaxis are body wide redness and rash, itchy palms and feet, cold sweats. Anaphylaxis manifests usually within 30 minutes of administration. If untreated it can lead to difficulty breathing and a serious drop in blood pressure, both of which can be life threatening. The use of antihistamines was found to alleviate the allergic reaction. Oral administration is unlikely to cause this reaction. If you suspect you may be experiencing an allergic reaction, seek immediate emergency medical attention.

Potential Drug/Product Interactions

No extensive listing of drugs taken with Cobroxin have been developed so care should always be exercised when introducing Cobroxin to your drug regime. Consult or coordinate with your physician when in doubt.

ASPIRIN AND IBUPROFEN: Animal data suggests there is no contraindication with aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). Clinical studies with Cobroxin components have been conducted with ibuprofen without any adverse effects.

OPIATES: It has been determined that Cobroxin could have additive effects to opiate products so caution should be used if using combination therapy. Opiate used should be reduced when starting Cobroxin.

INSULIN: No contraindications have been reported when similar products were used in diabetics using insulin.

HEART MEDICATIONS: It is known that Cobroxin exerts no direct effects on the heart.

BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATIONS: If you have high blood pressure that is well controlled with current medications exercise caution when introducing Cobroxin. It has been reported that Cobroxin lowers blood pressure especially in subjects with arthritis.

RESPIRATORY MEDICATIONS: No contraindications with Cobroxin have been reported.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS: Animal studies have shown that Cobroxin can influence the pathways associated with depression and that many antidepressants interact with nicotine receptors. Clinical reports suggest Cobroxin has a mild anti-depressant effect. Exercise caution when introducing Cobroxin.

CAFFEINE: No contraindications with tea or coffee have been reported.

Drugs/Products to Avoid

The following drugs should be avoided when using Cobroxin:

NICOTINE: Because Cobroxin works at similar targets as nicotine, this product should be avoided. It is especially recommended to stop smoking while using this product.

ALCOHOL: It has been reported that Cobroxin can lessen the overt intoxicating effects of alcohol. As the impact of this observation is not fully understood, it is recommended that you do not drink alcoholic beverages while using Cobroxin.

CORTISONE and other oral steroids: It is known that Cobroxin exerts anti-inflammatory effects. Care should be exercised when introducing when combining both products as they may have combined effects.

AZATHIOPRINE and other immune suppressants: It has been reported that drugs like Azathioprine can block the adsorption of Cobroxin in the stomach. Similarly Cobroxin may enhance the adsorption of immune suppressants leading to overdose.

OTHER HOMEOPATHIC PRODUCTS: There is no information on the combination of Cobroxin with other homeopathic products. Therefore, it is recommended that combining such products be avoided unless advised otherwise by your physician.
